Rear End Loaders

A rear end loader suits businesses that produce large amounts of dry compactable waste – such as general waste, cardboard, and dry mixed recycling among other types. They’re big, static containers that are kept on your site to fill with appropriate rubbish. Then you can arrange collection and disposal on a schedule best for your company.

While they’re similar to front end loaders, they normally have a much greater capacity. Plus, with a shape more like a skip, they have a small footprint that saves space on your premises while still providing storage for a higher amount of waste.

What is a
rear end loader?

A rear end loader (REL) is a large commercial waste skip or bin used to store dry and compactable waste types. It’s a huge static metal container that’s lifted off a large equipment vehicle and placed on your premises where it stays. They can store bagged or unbagged waste – such as carboard and paper for recycling.

Due to their size and shape, once full they’re tipped into a rear loading collection vehicle and then put back into the same spot. RELs vary in size and weight limits also depend on the type of waste they hold. Generally, companies that generate lots of relevant waste regularly install one or more for convenient storage and removal.

REL bin sizes

RELs have a relatively small footprint that saves space onsite. They’re measured in cubic yards and available in a wide range of sizes to suit the amount of waste you produce. Dimensions vary depending on the size of the rear end loader skip you choose, so it’s important you measure your premises to ensure there’s space for one to sit.

How many waste bags you can store in a REL also changes, as does the weigh limit based on the type. Our expert team can help you find the right size and type for your operations.

These are some of the main REL bin sizes available for delivery and collection:

  • 8 yard REL – around a 6,300-litre capacity to hold 80 bags of waste
  • 10 yard REL – can hold about 100 bags of waste
  • 12 yard REL – for storing up to 120 bags of waste
  • 14 yard REL – storage space for around 140 bags of waste
  • 16 yard REL – around a 12,600-litre capacity to hold about 160 bags of waste

If you generate less commercial waste or don’t have much room, then consider a similar bin with lower capacity – such as front end loaders.

Why do I need a
rear end loader skip?

Large businesses that generate a lot of dry and compactable waste on a daily or weekly basis can benefit from using a rear end loader skip. The relatively small footprint means it easily fits into many yards and business premises, while providing a big capacity to store hundreds of waste bags in one place.

RELs are lockable with a secure lid to reduce the chance of damage, theft, and any contaminants entering your waste. This ensures you meet your responsibilities as a business when producing and storing waste to keep it safe.

Compare front and rear end loaders

Even if you don’t produce lots of waste regularly, a REL can be a cost-effective option for storage and then arranging less frequent collections. This can reduce the costs you pay for removal. For companies that produce high volumes of waste it often works out more cost-effective than using lots of smaller skips or other bins.

Front end loaders are another common choice but a rear end loader generally has a much greater capacity. Plus, their skip shape means they’re easily to empty as they’re simply tipped into the collection vehicle and then put back in the same place for quick and convenient removal.

What can you put in
a REL container?

You can fill a REL container with general waste, compactable waste, and dry single waste types that are recyclable – such as paper, plastic, and cardboard. Due to their size, many businesses use them for bulky, construction, and industrial waste too. You cannot store glass, liquids, or hazardous waste in a read end loader skip.
